Labour lose Penistone and Stocksbridge for first time

Miriam Cates, pictured above centre, has been elected the new MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge. The Labour marginal, vacant after Angela Smith’s defection to the Lib Dems and under threat from the Conservatives, has now switched hands.

She was delighted to win, holding a 7,000+ majority, claiming victory via 23,688 votes with her main priorities being to “get Brexit done” alongside investing in the region’s public transport.

Labour’s Francyne Johnson came second with 16,478 votes, Hannah Kitching of the Lib Dems came third with 5,054 votes and John Booker of the Brexit Party came last with 4,300 votes. Turnout in the constituency was a record-breaking 70.03%.
