Phil Mickelson is making the headlines as golf’s oldest winner of a major, at the grand old age of 50.
If his win at the 103rd US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, has inspired you to play a round yourself, you don’t have to go far to find a good course in Sheffield.
After the first lockdown, golf was one of the first sports that started up again. The ability to social distance and be out in the open air with your friends appealed to many, and saw golf become the sport to play over the summer.
Here’s a look at six of Sheffield’s top golf clubs.
1. Hallamshire Golf Club
Set in the west of Sheffield the heartland layout designed by Harry S. Colt provides a strong test with spectacular views of both the Peak District and Sheffield City Centre.
Ranked 7th in Yorkshire by Top100 golf courses.
2. Wortley Golf Club
Situated near the stunning Wortley Hall.
Part of the Wharncliffe Estate, golfers of all abilities will enjoy the course layout which is surrounded by woodland.
John Gelsthorpe, a member at Wortley Golf Club, said: “It’s a mixture of easy and hard holes. The people are helpful and friendly, the course is usually not that busy.”
3. Rother Valley Golf Centre
With spectacular views of the surrounding area and a short drive from the M1, Rother Valley Golf Club’s Blue Monster 18 hole course offers a test for all golfers.
After playing the course for the first time Louie Orr said: “It is up there with the most challenging courses I’ve played, I will definitely be coming back”.
4. Tankersley Golf Club
Opened in 1907 and extended to 18 holes in 1924, this former mining site requires players to have accuracy off the tee as missing the fairways will be punished by the industrial past that remains.
5. Hillsborough Golf Club
Known as being one of the best courses in the north of England and set in the hills of Sheffield, it gives fantastic views of the Peak District and the Steel City.
6. Abbeydale Golf Club
Known for its manicured appearance, undulating greens and beautiful views and being set in the Beauchief Estate, the course is for golfers of all levels. Members include England cricket star Joe Root.
Tee times for all golf clubs above can be found on their websites.
